Halloween Costume Ideas

I know Halloween is still a ways off, but I have been thinking about costumes a lot lately. These are my top five favorite costume ideas in to particular order.

1. “Three Hole Punch Jim” from The Office. This is what I’ll go as, if the others fall through since it’s so simple.

2. “Mr. Spock” from Star Trek. I already haw part of this costume, so it’s most likely what I’ll do.

3. “Satan’s Robot” from Star Trek: Voyager. This is my favorite idea, but it’s also the most complicated.

4. Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, Inc. This is just funny.

5. “The 11th Doctor” from Doctor Who. This is probably the most expensive option, since the jacket alone goes for over $60 on eBay.

My Vacation, Part 2

I’ve had a very interesting time since last I posted.

Lightning struck a tree near our cabin last night and there were terrible storms for several hours.

I took as much of a shower as I could this morning, considering that the sinks here have 15 times the water pressure of the showers. And I’m almost certain that the German man in the next shower over was smoking while he showered…

I went to the Kennedy Space Center this morning and went strait to the Star Trek exhibit.

They had all kinds of props and costumes and I even snuck over the railing and had my picture taken with Worf.

I went on a space shuttle take off simulator that simulated what it would feel like to travel at 17,000 mph.

I then did the Star Trek Live show and bought a Tribble.

Finally, we took a tour bus over the the Saturn V Rocket Center where they had the command modules from several of the Apollo missions.

/p>They also had a full-sized replica of The Robot from Lost in Space. It had been my dream for years to built my own working replica of this robot, and now I am more eager than ever to do so.

Even though the day is almost over, I still have a lot more in store in the next few days.

Starfleet Academy Book Review

20110328-124622.jpg

I recently finished reading the first novel in a new Star Trek book series called Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. The Delta Anomaly is set in the new, alternate timeline established in J. J. Abrams’ Star Trek (2009) and was written by Rick Barba.
The new series centers around Cadet James T. Kirk and his adventures while he trains at Starfleet Academy. In The Delta Anomaly, Kirk and his good friend, Leonard “Bones” McCoy are trying to find a murderer that uses a swarm of microscopic robots to destroy the organs of his victims.
The book it pretty fast paced and well written, but I did catch a few things that are inconsistent with Trek cannon. There is reference made to a Ferringi trader in one part of the book, which shouldn’t be possible, since Starfleet had not encountered the Ferringi yet. Also, characters talk on phones at several points in the book, rather than communicators.
I suppose these inconsistencies can be attributed to the fact that the story is set in an alternate timeline, but I hope that future Trek writers don’t use the new timeline as an excuse for inconsistencies or as a springboard to change things too much.

Five reasons why Voyager is better than TNG

So I have come up with the top five reasons that Star Trek: Voyager is better than Star Trek: The Next Generation. They are in no particular order.

1.) The effects (visual and computer) are of much better quality. Voyager used a computer generated ship for the last few seasons verses TNG’s model-against-a-bluescreen. this allowed the shots of the ship to look more realistic. ( And I think Voyager had a bigger per-episode budget.)

2.) There is no Will Riker. I found his character repulsive. He always had an attitude with everyone, no matter if they were wrong or right. And they way he always gave orders on the bridge, while Picard sat there doing nothing… Fail. And he was massively puffy and was always trying to look sexy… FAIL!

3.) Voyager went back to what The Original Series was all about, going boldly where no man has gone before. They truly were where no human had ever been before, exploring strange new worlds and interacting with new civilizations just like the crew of the original Enterprise.

4.) Captain Janeway was defiantly the best captain. She could be forceful if she needed to, but most of the time she was just nice.

5.) 7 of 9. Nuff said.
